Project Abstract: Developing field pea varieties with improved disease resistance and harvestability

The overall objective of the activity is to develop improved field pea varieties and germplasm with improved yield, harvestability and disease resistance for Canadian pulse growers. The methods used in the activity are classical plant breeding for self-pollinated crops, i.e. hybridization followed by pedigree selection.

The significant achievements in the reporting period of 2016-04-01 to 2017-03-31 are as follows.

New field pea varieties: Three candidate pea varieties were supported for registration by the Prairie Recommending Committee Pulse and Specialty Crops (PRCPSC). They are P0520-116, P0521-109 and P0750-02. The commercialization rights of these candidate varieties have been granted to FP Genetics, SK in 2016, Legume Logic, ND, U.S.A in 2017 and SeedNet, AB in 2017, respectively. In addition, an orange pea variety AAC Oriol was issued a Certificate of Eligibility for Certification by the Canadian Seed Growers Association (CSGA). It is the first orange pea variety developed at AAFC. The variety was licensed to Wayfinder Farms, SK in 2016.

Plant Breeder's Rights: AAC Carver, a yellow pea variety that was licensed to Canterra Seeds, MB, was granted the Plant Breeders Rights by CFIA on November 8, 2016.
