Mission: ImPULSEible 2013


2013 National Competition

2013 marked the fifth annual Mission: ImPULSEible Student Food Product Development Competition. Provincial competitions were held in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and in Nova Scotia in early 2013. On August 21st, the provincial winners met in Toronto to present and market their innovative food products to a panel of judges.

Thank you to the Alberta Pulse Growers, Saskatchewan Pulse Growers, Manitoba Pulse Growers Association, Ontario Bean Growers and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for their on-going support for the competition. Prizes for first, second and third place were $2,500, $1,000 and $500 respectively.

FIRST PLACE was awarded to Team Ontario, represented by Margaret Clark and Camille Shniffer from the University of Guelph. Their award-winning “Nutrisnaps” crackers are made with lentil, pea and pinto bean flours and were presented in three flavour combinations: rosemary and sea salt, sundried tomato and herbs, and roasted chili and tamarind.

SECOND PLACE went to Team PEI, made up of Jason Bullee and Patricia Connolly from the Culinary Institute of Canada (Holland College) for “VegaMax”, an all-natural, nutrient dense chickpea milk beverage free of lactose, soy, wheat and gluten, and containing natural flavours from strawberries.

THIRD PLACE was awarded to Team British Columbia comprised of Jeffrey Ma, Claudia Ting and Marco Tang from the University of British Columbia. Team BC developed “Bean ‘n Butter”, a peanut butter alternative made with roasted chickpeas, red lentils, green lentils and great northern beans. The team also showcased their product in cookies, as a salad dressing and in a sandwich to show the variety of applications.

Judges for this year’s competition were Subra Balakrishnan, Corporate Chef with Griffith Laboratories, Sherry Casey, Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs with Loblaw Companies Ltd, and Gordon Bacon, CEO of Pulse Canada.
