Pulses are excellent sources of amino acids, the building blocks of protein, and energy supplied by carbohydrates. For these reasons, they are also a sought after commodity for animal diets, including livestock, pets and aquaculture. Three main areas of current use include pet food, aquaculture, and traditional livestock diets, including poultry, swine and cattle. In the future, there will be an opportunity to market livestock products like beef, milk and eggs with an environmental sustainability message generated from the inclusion of pulses in the animal diets. This will not only create a new market for pulses but create new markets for the livestock industries as well serving the interest in low carbon footprint food products.
